At Switch Dental in Lower Hutt, we know that sitting in a dental chair can feel like a big deal—especially if you’ve had a difficult experience in the past or just find the whole thing overwhelming. That’s why we offer IV sedation, for patients who want to feel calm, unbothered, and more relaxed throughout their treatment.
Whether you’re facing a long procedure or just want the whole experience to feel easier, IV sedation can take the edge off and make things far more manageable.

IV sedation is a modern and highly effective way to help you feel calm and relaxed during dental procedures that might otherwise feel stressful or overwhelming.
At Switch Dental, we use a technique called Target-Controlled Infusion (TCI)—a smart, computer-assisted system that delivers precise amounts of sedative through an IV line.
Unlike older methods (where a large single dose—or bolus—is given), TCI continuously adjusts the dose throughout your treatment to maintain the perfect balance: enough to keep you relaxed and anxiety-free, but not so much that you feel overly drowsy or slow to recover. The result?
- A smooth, steady sedation experience
- Minimal grogginess afterward
- Faster recovery, so you’re back on your feet sooner
You won’t be “asleep” like under general anaesthetic, but most people feel deeply relaxed and detached from the dental work being done. You’ll likely remember very little, if anything, about the procedure—and that’s kind of the point. It’s a gentle, modern approach to making dental care less stressful and more doable.
This isn’t just for people with phobias. Sedation might be right for you if:
- You feel anxious or uneasy at the dentist
- You’re having a long or complex treatment
- You have a strong gag reflex or trouble getting numb
- You want your appointment to feel like it flew by
It’s important to note that IV sedation must be booked in advance and isn’t available on short notice.
IV sedation is straightforward, but it does require a little planning. Here’s how to prepare and what to expect on the day:
- No eating for 6 hours before your appointment
- No fluids for 2 hours before (a big glass of water a few hours earlier is fine)
- Bring a support person who can stay on-site during your treatment and take you home
- Afterwards: no driving, decision-making, or serious life admin for the rest of the day
- Plan to rest up at home—Netflix and nap mode encouraged
Because we use TCI (Target-Controlled Infusion) sedation, the effects wear off faster and more smoothly compared to traditional bolus or oral sedation methods. That means less grogginess, fewer side effects, and a quicker return to normal once you’re home. It’s modern, precise, and designed for a gentler recovery.
Is IV sedation safe?
Yes. It’s much safer than general anaesthetic, especially in a dental setting. You remain conscious, your airway stays open, and we monitor you closely throughout.
How does recovery compare to a general anaesthetic?
It’s significantly faster. Most people feel back to themselves by the evening. No lingering grogginess or hospital stay required.
Will I feel pain during the appointment?
No. Once you’re relaxed, we’ll give local anaesthetic to numb the area. Most patients don’t even remember this part.
Can I drive home afterwards?
No—you’ll need a support person to take you home and stay with you.
Is it the same as being asleep?
No—this is conscious sedation. You’re relaxed but still aware. Most people remember very little, if anything.
Why Choose Switch Dental?
