Looking after young smiles is part of our DNA at Switch Dental. Through New Zealand’s Combined Dental Agreement (CDA), all children and teenagers are entitled to free basic dental care until their 18th birthday — and we’re proud to be one of the local providers.
That means whether it’s a routine check-up, a filling, or preventive care, you can bring your teen to us at no charge. For younger children, we also work closely with BeeHealthy (the community dental service), taking referrals for cases that need a dentist’s expertise. Both Dr Alex Lee and Dr Laura Bridger have worked as hospital dentists and supervisors in BeeHealthy clinics, so they understand the system inside-out and know how to make the experience reassuring for families.

- Who’s eligible? Every child from birth up until their 18th birthday.
- Who provides it? Under 13s are usually seen at BeeHealthy clinics. From Year 9 onwards, many families choose to see a private dentist like Switch Dental for their free care.
- What’s included? Routine exams (including X-rays), fillings, extractions, and preventive treatments such as fluoride and fissure sealants. A scale and polish is also included if required.
- What’s not automatically covered? Specialist treatments such as orthodontics (braces) or certain complex procedures. If treatment needs approval, we’ll apply to Te Whatu Ora on your behalf so you know what is — and isn’t — funded.
If you’re not sure whether your child is enrolled, call 0800 TALK TEETH (0800 825 583) or ask us and we can help guide you.
- Routine check-ups for high schoolers (13–17 years): A free yearly exam with X-rays if needed, plus any straightforward treatment or polish.
- Referrals for under 13s: If BeeHealthy refers your child for more advanced care, we’re here to help.
- Injuries: If your child has an accident, ACC usually covers the cost of treatment, including the first consultation. We’ll manage the claim paperwork for you.
- Special interest skills: With hospital and community backgrounds, our dentists are skilled at oral surgery, trauma, and trickier cases.
- Orthodontic concerns: Orthodontics isn’t covered under the free scheme, but the best time for an initial opinion is around age 9. We can provide guidance at your child’s regular visit.
- Wisdom teeth: If they cause pain in the teenage years, we can assess and discuss options early.
