What Are Dental X-rays and Scans, and Why Might You Need One?

Dental X-rays (radiographs) help us see inside your teeth, bone, and supporting tissues—areas that aren’t visible during a regular exam. They’re an essential part of diagnosis and long-term care, and we only take them when there’s a clear clinical reason to do so.

You might need an X-ray or scan to:

  • Check for cavities between teeth or under old fillings
  • Monitor wisdom teeth or jaw development
  • Assess pain, abscesses, or infection
  • Evaluate bone levels and gum health
  • Plan for crowns, implants, root canals, or extractions

We’ll always discuss the benefits and purpose of any X-ray before taking one.

What Imaging Technologies Do We Use?

Digital X-rays (Intraoral & Extraoral)

We use low-radiation digital sensors to take high-resolution bitewing and periapical images. These help us spot decay, monitor existing restorations, and assess root and bone health—all with less radiation than older film X-rays.

Trios Digital Intraoral Scanner (No More Gooey Moulds!)

Our 3D digital scanner lets us capture precise, full-colour models of your teeth and bite—no putty trays required. It’s comfortable, quick, and mess-free. We use it to:

  • Check for tooth wear and grinding over time
  • Monitor changes in bite or tooth movement
  • Create records for cosmetic and restorative planning

CBCT (3D Jaw Scanning)

While we don’t have a CBCT unit in-house, we work closely with a radiology partner in our building. CBCT scans offer a 3D view of your teeth, bone, sinuses, and nerves—ideal for planning complex procedures like implants, surgical extractions, or endodontic work. We’ll coordinate this on your behalf if needed.

Are Dental X-rays Safe?

Yes. Dental X-rays use a very low dose of radiation—typically around 5 microsieverts for a digital bitewing. That’s about the same as what you’d receive flying from Wellington to Auckland. We follow strict safety protocols and only recommend X-rays when they offer clear clinical benefits.

If you’re pregnant, let us know. In most cases, dental X-rays are postponed unless absolutely necessary, but if one is required, we’ll take every precaution to protect you and your baby. Lead shielding is available, though modern digital X-rays are already highly focused and safe.
